As a backsliding sometimes ex-smoker, I have considered buying, vacuum-packing and storing ten or tewnty pounds of the vile stuff. If not to destroy my own health [as a result of my own stupidity] to trade for more important things.......like single malt scotch.

Native Americans use it in their ceremonies.
Nicotine is a darned fine pain-killer (but doctors don't use it due to its addictive nature right up there with heroin.)
Interestingly enough, while checking out at Wal-Mart I was at a lane where they keep all the 'stuff' behind the counter - and I actually seriously looked at the metal round cans of it and thought, "Hmmmm...!" but I didn't have that much cash on me enroute home from Mick's Stomping Grounds. But, I think I will and throw some in the freezer. Buy some papers and maybe a few cheap pipes. It IS good tradin' material. I saw the SHTF as a good reason to quit - and I have a round pinback to button to a shirt that says something to the effect of: 'Beware This Crazy and Angry Bitch Has Just Stopped Smoking".
Don't know if tobacco seed is available in Southern States? I never look at hub's seed catalogs to know. Doubt they do or we'd have already had it planted. See catalogs gotta be politically correct, ya know, if you want to sell the masses garden seeds don't offer tobacco or they'll take their biz elsewhere in a big ol' huff, LOL.
I did stock up hub those little cigars that come in cigarette packages, and have been known to cadge one of those.
Interesting topic!
Suze....if you're going to store it, better to put a pound into a vac-pak with a half ounce of orange or apple peel, vacuum package it and keep refrigerated. This will keep it fresh[ish] for a long long time. The trick is to remove the oxygen to retard spoilage.

I like the American Spirit stuff in the blue package. Also, mick I like your new avatar and its size ;)

Obviously this ol' dawg needs to learn some tricks re that vac-pack stuff.
So...what's the best to get and method to do it?
Re orange and apple (and bread, too, for some stuff) that is an age-old pioneer trick to keep stuff nice - (i.e. apple or slice of bread tossed in on top of a cannister of brown sugar keeps it soft and pliable instead of drying out and getting harder than a brickbat. Works w/o fridge, too, as most of us run out of room to store EVERYthing in a fridge/freezer.
I'm way up on storing brown jars of yeast - and from 50 years of bread-baking experience I can attest that outdated (sometimes by quite long) yeast still works. Avoid the little foil pouches of yeast. Big ripoff by comparison.
Reading about how pioneers prepared for trek west is INteresting and informative - as was simply listening to old-timers (as we did for decades) who talked about 'how it was done'.
Growing tobacco in these parts years ago was simply part of the garden - and peanuts as well - though rabbits prefer peanut vines to topflight clover.
The vacuum packers can be had for under 60 bucks at Wally World, and the bags [a really long tube really] are relatively cheap. The wife and I bought one, along with 20 rolls of bag and we absolutely love it. We have packaged everything from meat and vegetables to garden seeds. We have a chest freezer that holds a schpitload of stuff, and doesn't use that much electricity. As for freezing tobacco, I'll have to look that one up. I guess when the air is evacuated there would not be much "freezer burn", so if it's good for pork chops, why not for smokes?
As for brands, TOP sells tobacco in little cans with about 200 grams each. When I was in Holland and France, roll your own were quite common, and I bought packages of Drum brand tobacco that was very nice. I also purchased little filters to roll into the cigarette. A pack of 1,000 filters was around $12.00 and a hundred grams of Drum was around eight bucks U.S.
There are a number of reputable sites out there and for my taste, it is a matter of personal preference. I found one site that sold a thirty dollar machine and pre-made wrappers with filters already in them for around a nickle each. One could actually sell cigarettes one at a time if it got ugly enough out there.
Back to the vacuum packager, get one today. There is no better way to extend the freezer life of food. None.

Been rolling my own for quite some time. I have 13lbs already, but will probably buy one more time before April 1st.
For as long as I can remember, I've kept my cigarettes and tobacco in the freezer. Mainly because I smoke menthol and I've found storing it there keeps it very fresh. Great for papers and tubes as well.
There was a time when most grew their own tobacco. Seeds aren't hard to find through a simple internet search. As far as my research has gone, it's legal to grow your own as long as it's for your personal use only. Couldn't hurt to buy some and prepare for when the shtf.

Top 5 tobacco producing states are in the south, so I'd imagine finding seed would be quite easy. Hell, I see it growing wild in places.
