I have just come into a rather large sum of cash and wish to buy physical silver.;) Should I buy a big chunk now? Should I buy one type (Silver Eagles for example)? Or should I buy a few thousand dollars worth every week until I am fully invested? Or course I wish to be fiscally efficient. I'm not too worried about timing the market though I would probably take advantage of a significant drop in the spot price. $14 silver seems so far away now.:(
Have I missed any options? What are they? I don't think I want huge bars, but Silver Eagles may carry too high of a premium.
Advice requested,
JesterJay

I have come to appreciate the virtues of Silver American Eagles. And I bought it in one big chunk. A few MONTSTER BOXES if you please.
Glad I jumped right in. Realizing good lift from the silver elevator now.

I agree Silver Eagles are what to buy. I bought myself a good chunk of them 5 or 6 years ago and they have certainly treated me well so far. Do enough searching for deals and I think you will be able to find a place with not too much of a premium. That being said Eagles have a premium because they are worth it! They are THE most recognized. Should the stuff hit the fan and fiat currcies collapse and gold and silver coin again be used as money, it is the silver eagles that will be most respected and easily used.

Well, you've already partially answered your own question and (imho) you're absolutely correct in your observation of:

"I don't think I want huge bars, but Silver Eagles may carry too high of a premium."

Big bars are also prone to tampering. The fraudsters drill out the silver by drilling lots of holes along the side of the big bar. Then they fill the holes with lead and then cap it off using some silver to hide the crime. That's also why many places that buy silver/precious metals are requiring assays on large bars/ingots to check that the .999 Fine rating on the bar's face is really so.

And you've hit the nail on the head in regards to Eagle's. They're a beautiful coin and everyone knows what they're holding when they have some of these in their hands. BUT...that PREMIUM premium that can be up to a couple of bucks per coin!!! Yikes!! No thanks!! That's why when I'm in the mood for something round (or rectangular) and silver I ALWAYS check out the privately minted silver rounds that seem to be available everywhere. I could care less what shape they're in, square, rectangular, round, who cares? 1 ounce of silver marked .999 FINE is the same as that $2 premium Eagle that says the same thing. Anything located closer to the actual spot/melt price is what I want when buying silver rounds or small weight bars.

Personally, I like the odd sized 10+ ounce bars and rounds that you see for sale everywhere, especially on Ebay. They're usually fairly close to the spot price, not big enough to bother tampering with and most importantly, you can carry one of the smaller chunks in your pocket and watch your friends smile when they see something STILL so recognizable. I've carried a 1922 silver dollar in my pocket for years, mostly as a good luck piece (it works!!) but I don't think anyone has not wanted to see or touch it should they happen to see me pull it out. I can GUARANTEE that thing gets a smile everytime...from me and them!!

Egales are great but i think as a investment tool you will do better with bars. the egales i bought were 1.75 over spot. when i sell i might get 1.00 over spot. where as the 100 oz bars i paid .50 over and i will loose .50 when i sell. you do the math. the egales are nice. green tubes and such. a very neat product. But i think anyone will tell you that bars will pay more! I really don't think our economy will tank so low to the point where paper money is not any good. I'm open to views here.

I am a true follower of Ted Butler and Izzy Friedman.
Silver is going into the hundred$. The premium on the MOST RECOGNIZED and TRUSTED silver coin on the planet will Jump up with the price. I will take my Eagles and see your bars with Maple Leafs and Prospectors.
I do nab bars also. Recognizable names, Engelhard, JM, and the like, BUT I also like oddball older vintage poured bars that make me feel like a prospector of sorts myself.
The economy doesn't have to tank for silver to soar. Inflation adjusted the price should be about $80. Due to the FACT that there is far less Physical silver above ground than is "spoken for" the price climb into the low to mid hundred dollar range could happen in the next few years. Some day silver will eclipse GOLD
You heard it here first, or so,

I have every reasonable form of silver

90% us coinage trades close to spot both buy and sell....hard to counterfit....easy to recognise....small tradeable increments...always the possiblity of gaining numismatic value if enough get melted....easy to buy small amounts...easy to barter if it comes to barter....reasonably priced small increments...

Will the silver eagle be worth more then a 10 ounce bar in the future?

Worth more? i cant see how 10z bar would be worth less than a 1oz coin. If it is, we arent speaking of silver prices, we are speaking of numismatic prices.
a eagle may be more desirable, I wouldnt argue that but not a 1000% premium., just my take from a noob on here!

I'm speaking about the price of equal amounts of silver. Silver eagle or bar silver. Will the shape of dictate the final selling price of one or the other.
