View Full Version : Counterfeit Quarter?

Hi - new to silver collecting. Have some pre '64 quarters. Was dropping them on a linoleum floor just to get used to the sound - and they all rang the same note - except for one. It was a 1942 quarter - fairly worn down. Gave no ring at all. Just a flat nuthin'. Tried it ten times, comparing with all the others. This one is unique - no ring - just an ugly "clank".

Is it possible that during the war the silver content was altered? Or does anyone have any other possible explanation?

Thanks

Brian

That would be a "terrazzo" floor (I guess linoleum wouldn't give much of a tone)

I recently saw a link to a site that had counterfeit walking liberty halfdollars. I understand they came from China. I doubt your quarter is a fake. Is it bent at all?

Does it weigh pretty close to 6.25 grams or a little less? That's a good sign. Does it stick to a magnet? If it does, it's fake. If not, just don't worry about it.

I got that weight from coinflation.com which is a wonderful reference.

I bought a stack of 10 rounds awhile back, they came in a little plastic container that was taped up. Inside most are shiny and look like, well, silver. 3 of them are dingy-blackish and don't look much like silver. Is that OK? Should I be concerned about that? Is it just tarnished or is it fake?

You may want to take all of them in and have them checked.I recently looked at some bullion for sale at a local shop and I swear some paranoid had them buried in the mud for the last 20 years, they were silver but they looked awful.I dident buy any.
You should be wary of them, fake US coins are out there so its a safe bet there are fake pandas maple leafs lunars etc. out there too.
