View Full Version : What is your favorite Silver Coin?

There have been a many emails sent to SilverSeek.com in regards to which Silver coin provides the best investment value. I am not proficient in this area so I would like to gather community feedback.

I find it of interest that some of the prior years in Silver Panda's have a large premiums built into them. Will current and future years provide similar returns?

I also find the Lunar Series of interest - the Kilo Silver coin would make a nice paper weight :)

Please share your views with us on what you see in a few years if silver continues to run higher --> which silver coin(s) appear to have the best leverage at this time (which ones will give you the best premiums?)?

Let's see....my favorite silver coin. Being an American I like US silver coins (of course). In particular I really like the silver Eagles but hate the premium. But I think my favorite silver coin of all is the one that I like to hold in my hand and roll around my fingers, feeling and touching the nooks and crannies of time. The good old American silver dollar in the Morgan variety. Being 50 years old I can remember getting to hold and examine such coins when I was a kid as my parents owned a small mom & pop grocery store/gas station and in the late 60's, early 70's, there were many silver coins, dollars among them, that made their last stop through our till and into the small family hoard consisting then of a 2 pound coffee can or two. They weren't real rare, dollars or other silver coins. But man o man, could you buy some candy with one of those!! The Morgan's just felt like a substantial, heavy and valuable coin in the hand of a youngster, a feeling I still get today. Plus, being one who enjoys history and collecting antiques, I always pause to think about who may have held this very same dollar that's now in my hand. The better the condition the less it was handled but some of those "sliders", if only they could talk. I'd bet they'd have a story to tell!
Investment wise, the cheapest silver dollar seems to be worth a sawbuck and they go up from there, so for an outright investment in silver bullion and unless you came into possesion of them like we did above, old silver dollars don't seem to be the right "investment vehicle" (imho) at $10 a pop when they contain about $8.50 worth of silver at todays spot prices. The least expensive rolls of silver dollars on Ebay go for over $220 ($11 per coin) so I can only imagine a dealer wanting even more than that.
Investment (in silver) wise, my favorite silver coin would be the 90% pre 1965 silver half dollars in any year and you can follow that with pre '65 silver quarters...I like them too!! These coins may seem a bit boring or maybe even dull but I can't help it if I don't like paying steep premiums for roughly the same commodity. Silver is silver and though that Eagle may be a bit brighter, when it hits the scale, an ounce is an ounce and they'll all melt in the crucible (should it ever come to that), old and new, just the same.
Finally, there's the sound of that American silver coin when it hits a desk top or heaven forbid, the floor. It makes that distinctive "silver coin rattling, hitting something sound" that you don't hear much anymore. Hearing that sound one (it's better sounding, the more of them that're in your pocket making that noise) of those old silver coins makes brings back a flood of memories and confirms what I learned long ago....they just don't make em (coins) like they used to anymore. And still after all these years, there's just something so positively intriguing about those Morgan silver dollars, especially when one's in my hand....

As far as 90% junk, I like the Walking Liberity half dollar. Mostly I have been buying as of late, circulated, not uncirculated, Silver Eagles for about $.50 over spot.

You got to love the way 90% US silver sounds when you move it around. Clean(no germs on silver). Feels real, no clank of clad, too. I like to see those 100 year coins. I think, wow. History, something of value, then and today.

But my favorites are those low mintage eagles. Mainly, cause they're worth nearly four times more than I paid for them. Sorry, I'm into silver for the money. Make that silver is money.

I bought one of these "U.S. china trade Silver dollars" a long time ago and it is my favorite. I is supposed to be the largest Silver Dollar ever struck by the U.S. mint. This picture doesn't do it justice because it is a nice looking coin.

I'm with chux03 when he says silver is silver. The bulk of my investment is in straight bullion. Rounds, bars, you name it. But, I also love holding on to a US coin and wonder where it has been. What has it bought? No doubt, each coin has its own untold story that will remain as such. Morgans are nice. I like the old tarnished (or toned for all you die hard collectors) coins. But, my favorite US silver coins to own are the Mercury dimes. There's just something about a big ol' bag of small silver coins that makes me feel like I've really got something.

Favorite Silver coins - PANDAS. Yes , they are pricier.
Love silver and the potential. But I somehow feel these coins offer a bit of insurance as well.
Just bought a bunch of the 1996 BU Silver Pandas at spot +6 or so. Yeah it's steep , but if silver eventually goes where i think it may , it won't matter all that much
Thing is , that should silver not sore ever upward, I like the Panda becasue some , especially the earlier ones have extremely low mintages (as low as 10,000 for earliest collectibles , but even the 1996 ', sI bought are estimated at ~ 100,000). I feel this , combined with the below , will make these coins very desirable.
I recently saw an article claiming that the Chinese Numismatic Assn already had more members than the US. So , you have a huge demographic. Just huge. Yes , many of these collectors do not have the assets to invest in Gold and Silver (yet) and concentrate on the ancient cast coins etc. I believe that as the middle class in China grows , as their purchasing power grows , plus their love of Gold and Silver , their fierce pride in all things Chinese , their l(sometimes curious)ove of the Panda itself, the coming Olympics in Beijing, the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Panda series next year, the extremely low mintages and the sheer beauty (imo) of the coins will make for a great potential.

And we need to get more people to post on this forum.
I WILL answer the question though to stay on topic.
Silver Eagles will be the best way to own silver in the future. They will soon stop minting them due to the high and rising price of silver. And their relatively small premium now could rocket into a major chunk of purchase price. And even if the premium does NOT get big, they will still be the best form of silver "currency".
One ounce coin, perfect for giving as gifts. Especially for the one on the receiving end when Ag goes to $412.00. :D
Minted by the US Gov't. and collected by many.
I buy them in semi-circulated condition. Paying just a few quarters above spot for each. Most important though is to BUY SILVER and hold it for much higher prices in the future.
Too much silver ain't even enough,
JesterJay

I agree. I have been checking with silverseek for a year or so and just now investigated the forums section. I know, I know....

I have three favorite coins...a 1905 Indian Head penny I found in my back yard in the '60's. That started the ball rolling for me.

Sometime later I received a 1952 quarter and instinctively knew that somehow this coin was different. At this point I was hooked on silver and when I showed this quarter to one of our neighbors, an adult, he took me to a coin shop where I purchased my next favorite coin, a 1960 Franklin Half for the year of my birth.

Needless to say, I have collected many, many coins but by far I enjoy my silver the most, and of course my three favorites, that I still have BTW.

How about the Kookaburra?
I just saw a Kilo Kook on Sat, very nice chunk of metal there. And it was cheap too, $575. My brother snatched it up at a gunshow, on my urging. On Ebay they are about $675-725. Good deal, nice coin, Life is grand.
I have a "spot" in my heart for Australian coins too. Don't know why, just like the place. Hope to visit friends there some day.

Living in Oz I have bought Silver Koalas. I have been getting them at A$29.95 and they now hold about A$22 in silver, being 1 ounce .999 pure. Also have some silver eagles.

Kookaburras are a bit more expensive to buy but seem to have a greater attraction to overseas investors.

My Spanish silver cob I found while surf fishing in Florida, I stepped on a large chunk, put it in my bait bucket, later I discovered 2 gold,5 Reales, I sold all but 1. They where from 1600's". I have culled out all 90% silver coins that do not have a change of be a rare coin, or increase in vaule over melt. 10lbs dimes,16lbs quarters, still working on my halfs,4000 oz ASE,120 oz Maples. Then I have a 2 & 1/4 Lb round shaped blob of Morgans & Peace that where in a fire. My Dads, from back in the 50's, where I live, it is hard to find a buyer, to bad it cost so much to get Assay! Any one know where to sell melted silver at the best price?
I like , if buying, I search flea markets, yard sales have been a great way to add to your holding, plus I have found some very hard to find coins, I always give a fair price and get referals to more great finds. :):)

Mine is the Morgan dollar, something about a big chunk of silver, and the artwork is awesome! i especially like the pre 1900 coins, lot of history in them....and they definetly hold their value.
